Report on landslide at Tan Thong Waterfall, Wang Thong Sub District, Wang Nuea District, Lampang Province

According to the news on March 6, 2021, there was the landslide incident at Tan Thong Waterfall located on the highway km 120 (Phayao-Wang Nuea) Moo 2 Wang Thong Sub District, Wang Nuea District, Lampang Province. The dimension of the landslide was 20 m height and 15 m width, approximately.

On March 8, 2021, the officer of Mineral Resources Office Region 1 collaborated with the officer of Doi Luang Natural Park and Wang Thong Subdistrict Administrative Organization to investigate the landslide incident. The investigation results are the following.

The geological characteristic of the site is the shale alternated with limestone, Huai Tak Formation, Ngao Group. There was the accumulation of calcium carbonate solution (Tufa) with high porosity at the area surrounding Tan Thong Waterfall which can easily cause the crack or cavity. It collected on the thick sediment. In addition, there is water flow in the waterfall all the year. These ate the factors causing the erosion that led to the landslide from the top of the waterfall introducing the sediment, Tufa, and trees to the ground of the waterfall. For this reason, Doi Luang Natural Park has announced to temporary shutdown Tan Thong waterfall tourist attraction for the safety of life and asset of tourists, officers, and the nearby community.

In primary, the officer of Mineral Resources Office Region 1 advised Doi Luang Natural Park and Wang Thong Subdistrict Administrative Organization to decrease the slope of the topsoil to increase the stability of the hillside which can reduce the risk of landslide occurred in the future.
