On August 10, 2020, Department of Mineral Resources by the Office of Mineral Resources
Region 4, examined the fossils after being notified by the Office of Krabi Natural
Resources and Environment together with Mr. Niwat Watthanayomnaporn (the informer)
in the Lang Kok Woa cave at Moo 3, Ao Luek Nuea Sub-district, Ao Luek District,
Krabi Province.
The inspection results found fossils in ancient
sediment layers attached to the cave wall. The inspection results found fossils
in ancient sediment layers attached to the cave wall behind cows corral where is
a Permian-era limestone cave with a mountain topography; and found fossils of coral
and crinoids in limestone. This limestone layer is dissolved by the acidic water
that forms caves cavity and stalactites. Inside the cave, found a streak layer of
ancient sediment with carcasses of broken bones and teeth of animals in the past
accumulated many kinds. It was initially assumed to be rodents such as hedgehogs,
wild deer, or hoofed animals such as cattle or wild boars which they were all bonded
together with calcium carbonate (CaCO3).
the Office of Mineral Resources Region 4 coordinated with Ao Luek Nuea Subdistrict
Administrative Organization to installed forbidden signs anyone to dig, destroy
or collect bones out of the area of Lang Kok Woa cave. In addition, they will coordinate
with experts of fossils and the Fossil Protection Division in order to conduct further
exploration and research.
