Fossil Protection Act, B.E. 2551 and subordinate legislations

07 Jan 2021
297

Department of Mineral Resources is responsible for enforcing this Act to manage fossils efficiently and be able to protect value fossils to be the national treasure.

The rationale for the issue of this Act as of fossil discovery in Thailand has increased and thus should be preserved for research on the historical information of the earth. In addition, it is the national natural heritage and can be potentially developed to be a learning resource and tourism attraction to generate revenue for the country. But at the present, there is not any specific law to protect, preserve and manage fossil causing illegal fossil delving or technically improper delving therefore the fossil could be damaged or commercially used resulting in the loss of the high valuable natural heritage of the public. Therefore, it is deemed appropriate to establish the law for efficiently protecting and managing the fossil. Hence the enactment of this Act.
